Tachographs.

Drivers of vehicle covered by the EU drivers "hours" rules must use a type -approved tachograph to record their activities. A tachograph may also be used as an alternative to written records on vehicles exempt from EU rules. Tachographs which are used to make legally required records- either under the EU rules or as an alternative to the record book under the domestic rules —must be calibrated, sealed arid inspected. A tachograph used only as a speedometer which is not producing a legally required record does not have to comply with this requirement but must comply with the requirements of a speedometer.

The tachograph must have a visual display showing distance traveled, speed and time. It must provide records of distance traveled and speed, driving time, other periods of work or attendance at work, breaks from work and rest periods and any opening of the case containing the record sheet.

Speed and distance measurements have to be within specified limits of accuracy and must be in kilometers. The instrument's face must be illuminated. It must be possible to check that a record is being kept without opening the case. This is achieved by the use of either a warning light or a window in the face displaying a section of chart. An authorized person must be able to read the previous 9 hr of recordings after opening the case but without removing the chart.
